What does IT outsourcing mean in concrete terms? (Definition)

Outsourcing of IT services describes the transfer or outsourcing of IT functions or IT services that were previously provided in-house to an external IT service provider such as soxes. The cooperation between the company and the service provider is regulated in a so-called service level agreement.

The services to be provided by your IT outsourcing provider within the scope of IT outsourcing are defined together with you in a service level agreement (SLA). You can find out more about service level agreements on the IT outsourcing provider page.

3 aspects defined in the outsourcing of IT projects:

Outsourcing IT projects is not just about outsourcing tasks. It requires clear decisions and a well thought-out setup. This is because the requirements depend on the specific goals, company structure, and scope of the project.

The service level: What exactly is outsourced?

Infrastructure outsourcing

Here, the technical basis is outsourced, e.g. the operation of servers, networks, cloud platforms or data centers. The aim is usually to reduce operating costs and increase scalability.

Application outsourcing

This includes the outsourcing of software development, maintenance, further development or modernization of existing applications. Companies benefit from external expertise and shorter time-to-market cycles.

Outsourcing of business processes

This involves the outsourcing of entire processes, e.g. IT support, data maintenance or online marketing. This area is often used to relieve internal resources or to gain access to specialized teams.

Geographical distance: where is the outsourcing partner located?

The choice of location has a major influence on communication, cultural understanding, costs and legal framework conditions:

  • Onshore outsourcing: The services are provided within the same country or economic area. The advantages are minimal language and cultural barriers as well as a simple legal framework.
  • Nearshore outsourcing: The services come from a nearby foreign country, e.g. from Eastern Europe for Swiss companies. Here, there is often a good balance between cost savings and cultural and temporal proximity.
  • Offshore outsourcing: If a partner in more distant regions such as Asia is commissioned, costs can fall significantly. However, the demands on project management, communication and time zone handling also increase.

Work distribution: who takes on which responsibilities?

Depending on the project strategy and internal expertise, outsourcing can be integrated to varying degrees:

  • Partial outsourcing (selective outsourcing): Only certain sub-areas, such as development or support, are outsourced, while the core expertise and project management remain in-house. This model is well suited to companies that want to retain control while benefiting from external expertise.
  • Complete outsourcing (full outsourcing): Here, an entire area including responsibility, resources and operations is handed over to an external partner. This variant relieves a great deal of pressure internally, but requires a high level of trust in the outsourcing partner and clear contractual regulations.

Two types of outsourcing

Onshoring
Offshoring

IT services are outsourced to a provider in the same country or region.

IT services are outsourced to a provider in a geographically distant country.

Greater control, as the provider is close by.

Requires clear processes as the provider is further away.

Little to no cultural differences.

Potential differences in work culture, business practices and expectations.

Particularly suitable for complex projects with a high need for coordination.

Suitable for standardized, clearly defined tasks with less need for coordination.

Quick adaptation to local market requirements.

High scalability, but longer training periods possible.

Send in software problems. Get solutions back.
