The term serverless describes an execution model that is used in the deployment of applications via the cloud. However, the term “serverless” does not describe the omission of the server for executing the code, but rather that a cloud provider makes the servers available and takes over capacity planning, configuration, management and maintenance of the servers in the background. In contrast to PaaS, the strategy represents a further abstraction. Instead of being provided with the platform as a service, the customer merely uses storage space or a database.

When does serverless make sense?

In the serverless method, the provider makes available to a hosted application exactly the resources it needs. This means that when an application is not in use, it does not consume any resources. The provider only charges for the effective resource consumption. This means that smaller applications, for example, which would not be profitable with conventional hosting, can be used cost-effectively.
