Although the «right to repair» has so far only been adopted in the EU, the Swiss parliament is also working on this issue. As Lucienne Vaudan, media spokesperson for the Swiss parliament, told us on request, efforts are already happening to create a similar law in Switzerland. The support for a Swiss circular economy was already emphasised in a press release from November 2023.
New EU repair law: Is your company ready?
The new EU «right to repair» law poses challenges for companies: Manufacturers, specialist stores and online shops must ensure that their products can be repaired quickly and cost-effectively even after the warranty has expired. Spare parts, tools and repair information must also be provided. These requirements mean more work and demand precise, efficient management – this is where the use of high-quality software becomes indispensable.
EU-law: right to repair
Entry into force: 30 July 2024
Deadline for EU countries: Until 31 July 2026 for national implementation
Important points:
- Cost-effective repairs: Liability extended by one year; repairs become cheaper and more attractive.
- Obligation to repair: Manufacturers must repair appliances such as washing machines, hoovers and smartphones as long as technically possible.
- Replacement appliances: Consumers can borrow replacement appliances or receive a refurbished appliance if a repair is not possible.
- Transparency: Manufacturers must disclose repair costs and offer incentives such as vouchers or funds.
Why a good software solution is crucial
To fulfil the legal requirements, companies need a solution that seamlessly integrates various aspects of the repair process. Customised software can help to efficiently manage repair requests, spare parts inventories and repair information.
At the same time, it helps to meet the specified timeframes and ensures that all repairs are carried out at reasonable prices. Without a smart solution, it is almost impossible to maintain an overview and ensure legally compliant processes.
Important functions of «right to repair» software
- Centralised spare parts and inventory management: The software monitors spare parts and repair equipment in real time and automatically reorders as required to avoid bottlenecks. This means that the right parts are always available and operations run smoothly.
- Optimised repair tracking and planning: A comprehensive tracking system records every step of the repair process, from enquiry to completion. This enables accurate tracking of repair orders, more efficient planning and adherence to deadlines.
- Automated price calculation and document management: The software automatically calculates repair costs for spare parts, labour and other factors. It also manages all important documents such as warranty documents and repair reports centrally, which increases transparency.
- Enhanced customer communication and automated notifications: In the customer portal, consumers can track the repair status in real time and view the history. Automatic e-mail or SMS notifications keep them informed of progress.
- Access to repair information and technical instructions: Providing detailed repair instructions and technical information that can be accessed online ensures that both consumers and repair services have the data they need at their fingertips at all times.
- Seamless system integration: The software can be easily integrated into existing business systems to facilitate data exchange and efficiently connect all repair processes.
