Sika Schweiz AG

Sika Services AG was faced with the challenge of modernising its existing software solution for the continued use of an existing torsional stiffness test system. The 32-bit APIs were no longer future-proof and with the transition to 64-bit and Office365, the testing system was at risk of being discontinued.

Software re-engineering for material testing

Challenge: Outdated interface blocks Office365 introduction

Sika Services AG wanted to modernise its existing software solution so that it could continue to use an existing and tried-and-tested measurement method in the future. In particular, the upcoming transition to Office365 required a new solution for the 32-bit APIs (programming interfaces). Improving user-friendliness and simplifying installation and integration into a future IT infrastructure were therefore top priorities.

Solution: Independent interface brings efficiency and stability

The development of an independent interface was the solution to these challenges. This interface establishes the connection between a predefined spreadsheet and the testing machine. The changeover required careful planning to ensure that all functionalities of the existing VBA code were retained and that the desired extensions could be implemented.

Result: Modern technologies meet ideal compatibility

The implementation of an independent 64-bit .NET interface successfully overcame these challenges. By choosing .NET technology, a powerful and flexible platform is used to ensure communication between the device and the Excel spreadsheet. Future maintenance work or further developments can also be simplified as a result. The future operation of the test system has thus been successfully secured.

Advantages of switching to the .NET solution

  • Smooth integration into modern systems
  • Simplified development, maintenance and updating
  • Easier data analysis thanks to visual representation
  • Future-proofing of the solution through the use of the .NET interface
  • Extension of the functionality of the torsional stiffness measurement through the implemented changes
  • Ensuring the future operation of the well-proven torsional stiffness measurement.
